I think that in places where this is a problem, people are not looking at giving as: their money belonging first to God and then to themselves. People seem to think we "pay God His" at church, whereas they should be thinking to give first and "live on the rest." It is a sad affair as you describe.

I think that this probably has something to do with the seeker-sensitive "felt-needs" movement that has swept through churches. The mindset is that we need to "sell" the church and do things that bring them in; entertaining things. So when people shop for churches based on preferences, and show up because they are being entertained to their likening, why should it be a surprise that they would give from an "admission" mindset?

I think a Biblical view of giving is not taught in most churches, so people don't understand it and don't do it. Therefore, the churches have to focus on it so much to keep the power on. Its sad, and not as God intended.

Preach the Word, all of it, and problems like this have a way of disappearing as hearts are changed and conformed to the Word of God. I am thankful that there ARE still churches out there that preach the Word!
